About this site

This site is based on a series of calendar techniques developed by me in 1986 and never changed since.  I have not looked at a calendar once since I developed these techniques, except of course for appointments. Over the years I have tried to teach the basic Day-of-the-Week technique to hundreds of people but have generally given up on that after discovering that most people do not have the patience to learn something new, even though the benefits are enormous. Although the techniques at first look daunting and quite formidable, they really are not.  I decided to post my techniques on the web just in case someone out there is inclined to learn them, and to save me the 20 minutes I invested to teach someone the technique each time I thought someone was serious about learning it, but they were not. To my knowledge, only two of my students ever went on to learn the technique well, but that's OK.

I developed the technique shortly after working on a payroll problem for the U.S. government agency I was working for in 1984. In short, I discovered that by paying their employees every two weeks an amount equal to 1/26th their annual salaries, since the year was actually one day more than 26-two-week periods, government agencies were actually overpaying employees more than a 385 million dollars every year (civilian workforce alone in 2011 dollars and employees) because every 11th year or so the employees would get an extra 27th paycheck, a seven percent raise in one-year.  The GAO got a hold of my report and recommended that government agencies change the formula they used to pay people, and the change was adopted everywhere.

As I worked on that problem, I got intrigued by the mechanics of the calendar, and it was then that I discovered that some autistic savants could do variations of perpetual calendar techniques in their heads but without being able to explain how they did it.  I suspected it might be some formula they were subconsciously falling back on, and so I set out to develop the simplest, portable (in one's head) formula possible, and I did.  But it was not until the 1990s that those studying the matter were able to figure out how autistic savants can do these things, and they are not relying on some formula as I thought.  (See some articles on autistic savants may be found in The Library.)   In the meantime, having developed the formula, I had no choice but to internalize it within myself, and I did.
